BMW’s Neue Klasse Minivan Concept Suggests China Could Want Something Different
BMW intends to expand its SUV and sedan lineup by introducing around 40 new models by 2027. Facelifted models, shaped by Neue Klasse technology and design styling, are also on their way. Yet, there is a segment left unexplored by BMW, and that would be the Chinese minivan luxury segment.
An independent rendering by artist Sugar Chow imagines what might happen if BMW decided to step into that space, and the idea has already sparked discussion.
The digital concept appeared on Chow’s Instagram page, where it drew reactions from both fans and critics. While BMW has yet to tap China’s premium minivan market, the render suggests how the company might approach the formula using its upcoming design language.
Exterior
Visually, there is clearly a Chinese signature filling up the air, as the model envisioned here is adopting some styling cues found on other Chinese models from BMW. The minivan comes with a Neue Klasse design from the new iX3, with slim LED headlights flanking a narrow front kidney grille. The rear end is highlighted by elongated taillights, while the roof spoiler reinforces the carmaker`s sharper aesthetic.
Other features also include large sliding doors, sculpted fenders, or a stretched wheelbase, all part of the Neue Klasse design concept. Also, despite its family-focused brief, it comes across as sportier than the average minivan. The surfacing is sharp, the proportions tight, and the large diameter wheels contribute to a stance that feels more athletic than utilitarian. It also appears noticeably larger than Europe’s 2-Series Active Tourer, currently BMW’s only compact minivan and a model with an uncertain long-term future.
Interior
Sugar Chow did not share interior renderings, but he describes a three-row layout accommodating six or seven seats, aligning the concept with established luxury minivan expectations in China.
Complete Powertrain Information
While imagining the vehicle with a 3.0-liter inline six petrol engine is described as tempting, the render is positioned more realistically around BMW’s electric Neue Klasse architecture, especially if aimed primarily at the Chinese market and possibly Europe.
Hypothetically, BMW could fine-tune its Neue Klasse minivan by providing engaging and exciting-to-drive technology rather than envisioning the model as a simple passenger carrier. This means introducing new high-tech features like Gen6 eDrive technology, four superbrains, or a much larger capacity battery pack, all contributing to increasing performance and mile range.
Other Specifications
Once it tackles the Chinese market, the BMW Neue Klasse minivan would rival the already announced Volvo EM90, Denza D9, Maxus Mifa 9, or Li Auto Mega. From Japan, the rivals announced are the new Toyota Alphard/Vellfire, Nissan Elgrand, and the Lexus LM.
